STCW95 (BASIC SAFETY TRAINING) course

If you intend to work on Australian registered vessels at some point in your career you would be advised to do an AMSA-approved course. If you only do an MCA or IMO compliant course you will not be eligible to work in Australia! We offer a Superyacht-specific 8-day AMSA-approved course.

 

The program provides basic safety training for Superyacht crew to satisfy the requirements of STCW95 Section A-V1/1 and students will be issued the four required STCW Certificates.

Personal Survival Techniques Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
Elementary First Aid (Marine First Aid) Personal Safety and Social Responsibility

 

The 8-day (AMSA-approved) programme will provide participants with theory and practical exercises. On successful completion the participants will be able to:

       Carry out the duties required of crew members during onboard emergencies

       Use onboard life-saving equipment and implement survival techniques during periods in the sea and in survival craft.

       Use onboard life-saving equipment to assist in rescuing a person from the water.

       Identify potentially hazardous situations arising in the work environment.

       Take appropriate action to minimise the risk of injury.

       Be trained in delivery of First Aid in the marine environment.

       Understand sail related safety issues on Superyachts.

 

Participants are required to be in good health at the time of enrolment.
Participants that have existing medical conditions or injury that may affect their ability to participate in the training programme must discuss their condition with the course Trainer and Assessor.
Participants taking prescribed medication or with health problems must advise the training program facilitator.

First Aid Information:

Participants who currently hold a First Aid Certificate will need to provide their certificate to the Trainer and Assessor prior to the training program for verification and approval. On approval these participants will be exempt from undertaking the First Aid Training. Note: The training programme cost will not be reduced if student holds a current First Aid Certificate

FIRE-FIGHTING INFORMATION

Participants will be required to travel to the professional fire site for two days of training.

No transport will be provided for this training; participants generally car pool. It will be organised amongst the students during the course.

Overnight accommodation in Newcastle is usually sought, and full information regarding location and travel will be provided. Students can also travel by train as it is nearby to a station.

To ensure the safety of course participants we require:

       Participants to be in good health.

       No mobile phones in any area around and within the live fire area.

       Participants do not leave the facility without informing the facilitator.

       Participants comply with Workplace Health & Safety Requirements and all lawful direction given by instructors.

       Participants to wear long pants and enclosed footwear for practicals.

       Participants to wear overalls, boots, fire suits, gloves, helmets and safety gear which will be supplied

       Jewellery, watches, rings etc are not to be worn during the Fire Fighting training.

       Participants to bring their own towel and toiletries as shower facilities will be provided.

       Participants do not consume drugs or alcohol prior to and during the training programme.

 

Where to be?

When to be there?

The Superyacht STCW95 is primarily conducted at Ultimo but your practical training also takes place at the Qantas Jet Base pool and Darling Harbour (lifeboat), and Newcastle for Fire-fighting training.

Upon registration you will be sent a map and the full instructions to find the training venues. The main course location is close to Central train station in the south end of Sydney CBD.This area is a hub for student accommodation so there are plenty of hostels to choose from!

Training begins at 0830 sharp on the first day of the course and you will start with the Induction program.
Your subsequent daily training schedule will then be explained to you, as well as the various locations and requirements.

Make sure that you arrive on time by factoring in peak hour' traffic to your travel plans.

Location:

The Australian Superyacht Deckhand Certificate is primarily conducted at Ultimo but your practical training also takes place at the Sydney Superyacht Marina, Rozelle Bay.

General Information:

The entire training package consists of 14 training days and can be done in one continuous line. There are some days off (on Sundays) so each month the program is slightly different and the span of days can be up to 17 days long.

The 6 days training for Superyacht Deckhand can follow the STCW95 course or can be deferred to another set of dates if this is more convenient for you.

After your 14 days of training you will emerge with a well-stocked CV: suitable to approach the Superyacht industry at Deckhand level.

Deckhand Students will be trained to:

       Survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment

       Assist in safe operations and emergency procedures on a coastal vessel

       Contribute to effective communications and teamwork on a coastal vessel

       Observe personal safety and social responsibilities

       Prevent, control and fight fires on board an ocean-going vessel

      Assist in routine deck operations within limits of responsibility of a Deckhand

       Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices

       Apply first aid

       Operate survival craft and other lifesaving appliances

       Fight and extinguish fires on board a coastal vessel

       Stay safety in a small powerboat

       Launch and land a small powerboat

       Berth and un-berth, and use knots and ropes

       Use high and low speed whilst boat handling

       Manage man-overboard and coming alongside techniques

       Close quarters manoeuvring and mooring

       Anchoring

       Tides and weather theory

       Types of craft and handling

       Buoyage, navigation and passage planning

       IRPCS (COLREGS)

       Routine outboard engine maintenance

   

Students will also gain:

 

      A practical knowledge of GMDSS sub-systems and equipment which is appropriate to vessels operating in Australian waters specifically, MF/HF and VHF radiotelephony equipment with digital selective calling (DSC) facilities, and emergency position indicating radio beacons of the 406 MHz and 121.5/243 MHz type

       an ability to use MF/HF and VHF radiotelephony and digital selective calling (DSC) operating procedures, particularly those relating to distress, urgency and safety

       an understanding of simple maintenance practices required to keep the marine radio equipment specified in good working order, including the repair of minor faults

       an understanding of the regulations applicable to ship stations equipped with radiotelephony and digital selective calling facilities

       a basic knowledge of the Australian marine search and rescue system

       experience using small powered craft such as RIBs, tenders and sportsboats that don't generally undertake long or offshore passages

Powerboat drivers in New South Wales are legally required to hold a power boat licensefrom NSW Maritime Authority. You will emerge from this course with your NSW Boat Drivers Licence. You will need to bringsome photo ID and we will visit NSW Maritime to organise it after your training course.

You will need: appropriate clothing for the practical training, ie foul weather gear or waterproof spray jacket, fleece, suitable footwear non-slip/non marking (deck shoes), gloves, a hat for sun protection and sunscreen, sunglasses.

 

All safety equipment is provided. You may use your own PFD and harness if it has been inspected and is in good working order. Please also bring your own personal 406mhz PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) if you have one.

We do not carry insurance cover for your belongings so in the event of loss or damage we cannot compensate you.

If you are aware of any medical condition that may affect you during the courseplease speak in confidence to a member of staff. If you are prevented from completing your course for medical or any other reasons, there will be no refund of fees or travel expenses. We will try to reschedule, to allow you to complete your training, but this may not be possible and you should rely on making a claim on your insurance.

 

Your Practical days at Sydney Superyacht Marina:

Students will do their powerboat training, alternating between an Outboard RIB and an Inboard Jet-driven RIB. These are the kinds of RIBS used by most Superyachts, particularly the large sailing Superyachts! The group will spend the following day with a team of professional boat detailers who will show the group the finer points of boat detailing, and deck cleaning and demonstrate what products, techniques and equipment are commonly used. The day will be totally hands on. You will know how to approach the tasks that will be required of you on a daily basis in your role as Deckhand on a Superyacht.

 

Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency

Your certificate will be issued by the Australian Maritime College (AMC).
The course will include operations of VHF-DSC (short range) Radio as well as HF DSC (Long Range) radios.

WHAT TO BRING:

Note paper and pen/pencil.

Proof of Identity such as a Passport or photo ID (Drivers Licence)

One Passport size photo for inclusion on your MROCP Licence when it is issued by the Australian Maritime College (AMC).You will be provided with comprehensive course notes at the course and have access to the Marine Radio Operators Handbook. You can also download a copy from the AMC website. This publication is updated every 2 years.

 

GENERAL INFORMATION:

The full course runs over 6 days, however if a Sunday falls within the schedule, this will be a day off, making the course span an extra day.

Dress code: As Superyacht crew we aim to distinguish ourselves as professionals. You should wear either a white or navy polo shirt or an epaulet shirt with black or navy trousers or shorts. Deck shoes are perfect but if you don't have them then some Dunlop volleys or similar are also acceptable. No torn or ripped or heavily branded clothing should be worn.

You can purchase lunch from food outlets in the surrounding area. You will be spoiled for choice! or bring you own.

There will be tea and coffee making facilities (plus fridge and microwave) available at the training college.

 

 

Australian Superyacht Deckhand Certificate: Terms & Conditions:

If you hold AMSA-approved STCW95 certificates you are eligible to join the Superyacht Deckhand course.

 
A booking is only confirmed when payment is received. Bank Transfer preferred and credit facilities available.

We offer credit card facilities to assist your finances. However credit card payments attract a 2% surcharge.

A minimum of 10 days' notice is required for postponement. If postponement or cancellation occurs within this time you will incur full loss of monies. All payments are non-refundable unless the course is cancelled.

If it helps you to organise your finances we accept 50% deposit to be made to secure your place in the course and balance to be paid 10 days prior to the course start date* however we will require your credit card details as security for the balance.
